Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)

Lymphedema is a condition that most commonly causes swelling in the arms or legs, but it is also possible for it to occur in the abdomen, chest, groin or face. It is caused by disruption or blockage of the lymphatic system due to cancer, surgery, radiation, infection, and in some instances, genetics.

We provide Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) for comprehensive and effective treatment of upper and lower extremity lymphedema. This includes compression bandaging, manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), therapeutic exercise, and transition to an appropriate compression garment for long term management. CDT is the nationally-recognized, gold-standard of care for lymphedema. Our clinicians are certified specialists through the Norton School of Lymphatic Therapy.

At Mobility Project Physical Therapy, we have certified physical therapists on staff who specialize in the treatment of lymphedema in Eugene, OR. How is lymphedema treated?

There are a variety of treatments for lymphedema that may be used depending on the severity of the condition. At Mobility Project Physical Therapy, we offer a combination of passive and active therapy treatments, including:

Phases of lymphatic therapy

Phase I: Intensive Phase

The intensive phase of lymphedema management includes visits 3x per week for approximately 4 weeks, encompassing MLD (manual lymphatic drainage), meticulous skin care, compression bandaging and exercises to promote lymphatic return.

Phase II: Management Phase

Follow up sessions of MLD as needed, exercise, meticulous skin care, and compression bandaging until transition to appropriate compression garments is possible. Follow lymphedema prevention guidelines, and maintain periodic re-evaluation for garment replacement (6-12mo).
