Pilates was originally created by German-born Joseph Hubertus Pilates in the early 20th century as a means to help rehabilitate wounded soldiers who were not allowed to get out of their hospital beds during World War I. Joseph Pilates studied yoga, meditation, boxing and gymnastics, and was interned in England with other German citizens after the outbreak of WWI. He began working in hospitals with wounded soldiers and other detainees, and developed the Pilates method of exercise to assist with rehabilitation of wounded soldiers. After the war ended, Joseph Pilates emigrated to New York, and set up “Joe’s Place”, where he continued to develop and teach Pilates.

Since then, Pilates has evolved to be used as a safe and effective exercise tool in physical therapy to relieve pain, and increase strength, stability, balance and flexibility. Pilates is also highly effective for improving tolerance to movement, and increasing body awareness and posture.
